Parallaxian in C64 Scene News & Media

Parallaxian has been getting some welcome coverage across the retro scene lately. Thought I’d do a quick roundup for anyone who missed it.

RetroGamerNation

Parallaxian was featured in the December 2020 C64 Round-Up from RetroGamerNation. If you watch the video, the Parallaxian segment starts at around the 8:28 mark. It’s always a bit nerve-wracking seeing your work-in-progress shown alongside polished releases, but the coverage was positive and it’s great to have the project on people’s radar. RGN does solid work covering the C64 scene and I appreciate them including Parallaxian alongside the other December releases and announcements.

IndieRetroNews

IndieRetroNews also picked up the Parallaxian story. For those unfamiliar, IRN is one of the busiest retro gaming news sites going — they cover everything from new C64 releases to Amiga, Spectrum, and beyond. Getting a mention there puts the project in front of an audience that might not follow the C64 scene specifically but has a general interest in new retro developments. Every bit of visibility helps when you’re making a game for a platform that most people think died in the early ’90s.

Blast Annual 2020 Volume 1

The big one for me personally: Parallaxian is featured in Blast Annual 2020 Volume 1. Not just a mention or a screenshot — I wrote a proper development article for it. If you’re not familiar with the Blast Annual, it’s a high-quality printed publication covering the retro gaming scene, and having a multi-page spread about the technical side of Parallaxian’s development was a genuine honour. I go into detail about the engine architecture, the design decisions behind the parallax scrolling system, and some of the VIC-II techniques that make the visuals possible. Getting to write about this stuff for a print publication felt like a proper milestone.

Thanks to everyone who’s been sharing the project and spreading the word. Developing in isolation is the norm for something like this, so it means a lot when the wider scene takes notice.
