C64 Wishlist: Uridium II Sequel Concept

Imagining what a hypothetical follow-up to Andrew Braybrook’s legendary Commodore 64 shooter Uridium could offer. The original set such a high bar for horizontal shooters that any sequel would need to innovate significantly while preserving the responsive feel that defined the experience.

The Original’s Legacy

Braybrook’s masterpiece achieved such visual and gameplay polish that it reportedly convinced some consumers to purchase a Commodore 64 specifically to play it. The game showcased flawless smooth scrolling at speeds that seemed impossible on 8-bit hardware and a distinctive metallic aesthetic with gleaming surfaces and precise shadow work that defined its era.

The Manta fighter’s inertia-based movement created skill depth that rewarded practice, while the ability to flip direction mid-flight added tactical possibilities absent from simpler shooters. Few games of the era achieved such cohesive design where visuals, audio, and mechanics reinforced each other.

Desired Features for a Sequel

  • Combined vertical and horizontal scrolling mechanics, expanding the playfield beyond the original’s strictly horizontal progression and enabling more varied level design
  • Varied planetary environments replacing the original’s space cruisers, each with distinctive visual themes and gameplay hazards that affect strategy
  • Automatic ship retreat for improved reaction windows when threats appear suddenly, reducing frustrating instant deaths from off-screen enemies
  • Adversaries entering from all screen boundaries including behind the player, requiring situational awareness beyond simple forward focus
  • Collectible power-ups and penalty items adding strategic depth through risk-reward decisions during intense combat
  • Pursuit and bombing mission segments varying the gameplay pace and providing objectives beyond simple survival
  • Spectacular explosion animations with screen shake conveying impact, making destruction feel satisfying rather than merely functional
  • Background music during gameplay that adapts to combat intensity, enhancing immersion without overwhelming sound effects
  • Dedicated Commodore 128 edition leveraging the 2MHz mode for smoother performance and additional graphical detail

While the original creator would likely not undertake this project given his retirement from C64 development, talented developers within the retro community could potentially deliver the sequel this classic deserves. The technical challenges are significant but not insurmountable with modern cross-development tools.
